Deep-Sky Astronomy Event Set for Jan. 13

A star party with an emphasis on deep-sky objects will be offered Saturday, Jan. 13, by the Klamath County Museum.

The astronomy event will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Stateline Road south of Merrill.

“The site on Stateline will provide the exceptionally dark skies we need to see some very distant objects,” said Greg Christensen, an amateur astronomer assisting with the event. “We should get a fantastic view of the Andromeda galaxy, and some nice star clusters.”

To reach the site, drive south from Merrill on South Merrill Road to Stateline Road, and turn right. Signs will direct participants to the star party site on the left, or south side, of Stateline Road, about a quarter mile west of the South Merrill Road.

Those arriving later are encouraged to turn off headlights as they enter the parking area.

Saturday’s star party is open to anyone interested in learning about the night sky. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars or telescopes, and dress in layers. In the event of cloudy skies, the event will be rescheduled for a later date.

A daytime astronomy event, with an emphasis of viewing the last-quarter moon and the sun, will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the Klamath County Museum, 1451 Main St.
