Wildfire Update: Timber Crater 6 Fire [July 31st]

Crater Lake National Park, OR – The Timber Crater 6 Fire remains at 3,126 acres, is 80% contained, and is staffed with 352 personnel. The eastern portion of the fire is in patrol status. Crews on the southern boundary continue to mop up farther into the interior to complete the remaining 20% of open line. Single tree torching was observed in the interior of the fire area. Heavy fuels in the interior will continue to smolder and burn, putting up occasional smoke. This will continue until a season ending weather event, such as a heavy rain or blanketing snow extinguishes the last of the heavy fuels.

Crater Lake National Park, OR – The Timber Crater 6 Fire is now 3,126 acres and is 65% contained. Work to strengthen and improve containment lines continued on the southern perimeter of the fire. Firefighters reported creeping and smoldering fire behavior along the fire line. Crews continued with mop up and cold trailing, locating hot spots near the perimeter and extinguishing them.

Crater Lake National Park, OR – Firefighters have completed line around most of the fire. Yesterday, hot and dry conditions allowed fire to progress across a “donut hole” – an interior pocket of unburned fuels along the south edge of the fire – and tie it into the fire’s edge. Containment is now 65%, with acres burned at 3125 acres, and 712 people are working on the fire.

Wildfire Update: Timber Crater 6 Fire [July 26th]

Crater Lake National Park, OR – Containment of the Timber Crater 6 Fire, burning in the northeast corner of Crater Lake National Park and Fremont-Winema National Forest, surpassed the 50% mark (55%) on Wednesday.  Firefighters safely and successfully gained ground as they continued mopping up hot spots, and either completed or made great progress on key sections of primary, alternate and contingency lines.  Acres burned increased to 2943 as a result of low severity burnout within primary containment lines.  There are 680 personnel assigned to the fire.  While crews continue moving toward full containment and suppression of the fire, they will also begin rehabilitating fire lines and other suppression treatments as needed and appropriate.  One example is constructing water bars on fire lines to reduce erosion and stabilize soils.

Wildfire Update: Timber Crater 6 Fire for July 25th, Now 2355 Acres

Crater Lake National Park, OR – Fire crews continued making great progress Tuesday on the Timber Crater 6 Fire, which has been burning in the northeast corner of Crater Lake National Park and more recently on the Fremont-Winema National Forest since July 15 following a passing lightning storm. Containment has increased to 35% as firefighters successfully mopped up hot spots and secured holding lines from recent burnout operations. Fire growth has been minimal over the past two days with 2355 acres now burned. There are 639 personnel assigned to the fire. Primary fire management objectives remain fully suppressing the fire while minimizing impacts to natural resources and the public, with public and firefighter safety as the foremost consideration.

Wildfire Update: Timber Crater 6

Crater Lake National Park, OR: Northwest Incident Management Team 9 (Incident Commander Brian Goff) took command of the Timber Crater 6 Fire at 6 a.m. today. The fire is actively burning in mixed conifer in the remote northeast corner of Crater Lake National Park. This is one of several fires ignited by lightning in and around the Park on Sunday, July 15. Other fires are being managed by other incident management teams and local resources.
