Winter Storm Warning continues through Monday morning

MEDFORD, Ore. - A Winter Storm Advisory and Warning continues for the quad county area through Monday. Additional advisories and warnings extend beyond the basin and have been issued for much of the Cascades of Oregon, and the Siskiyou & Sierras of California.

Detailed alerts from the National Weather Service for basin are communities are listed below. Including expected snow totals and the extended forecast for Klamath Falls.

The National Weather Service is strongly discouraged travel during this weekend.

If you must travel, bring some extra supplies and your emergency kit with you. You never know when passes may close and you may be stuck in traffic for an extended period. Be sure to bring blankets, medications, food, water, flashlight, tire chains, and fully charged cell phone.

Also before you hit the road, be aware of the current conditions by checking the webcams in the region at tripcheck.com or quickmap.dot.ca.gov and know the current forecast at www.weather.gov/Medford.

The safest place during a winter storm is indoors.

 

7-Day Forecast for Klamath Falls, Ore.

Christmas Day
Snow, mainly after 4pm. Steady temperature around 25. West southwest wind around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Tonight
Snow. Low around 17. Southwest wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Sunday
Snow. Patchy blowing snow after 1pm. High near 25. West southwest wind 17 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Sunday Night
Snow, mainly before 10pm. Patchy blowing snow before 7pm. Low around 16. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Monday
A 40 percent chance of snow, mainly before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 24. West northwest wind around 9 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Monday Night
A 10 percent chance of snow showers after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 8.

...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 AM PST MONDAY ABOVE 2000 FEET...

* WHAT...Heavy snow above 2000 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 10 to 15 inches with locally higher amounts to 30 inches in the higher terrain. Winds gusting as high as 45 mph.

* WHERE...All areas in the South Central Oregon Cascades including Crater Lake, Diamond Lake, Highway 230 and portions of Highway 62.

* WHEN...Until 8 AM PST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult to impossible. Areas of blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Snowfall rates could approach 1 inch an hour this evening and overnight. A lull is expected Saturday morning (roughly 4 AM to 10 AM PST) where new snow accumulations may be less than 2 inches, but this will be more noticeable in the Siskiyou mountains (including Siskiyou Summit). There may be a less noticeable lull in the Cascades from Howard Prairie north. Heavier showers and higher amounts of snowfall begins to increase again Saturday afternoon (after roughly 2 PM PST).

* WHAT...For the Winter Storm Warning, heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 10 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. For the Winter Weather Advisory, snow. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 11 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph.

* WHERE...Klamath Basin and Northern and Eastern Klamath County and Western Lake County. The Winter Weather Advisory includes all areas. The Winter Storm Warning includes US Highway 97 from Chiloquin to Crescent, and the higher portions of OR Highway 140.

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, from 10 AM Sunday to 7 AM PST Monday. For the Winter Weather Advisory, until 10 AM PST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...A lull in showers is expected Saturday morning through the afternoon, where new snowfall will be light (less than 2.5 inches), but gusty winds of 20-25 mph will continue to cause drifting snow and reduced visibility. Snowfall will increase intensity again starting Saturday evening.

Winds gusting as high as 50 mph. For the Winter Weather Advisory, snow. Additional snow accumulations of 1 to 9 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph.

* WHERE...Central and Eastern Lake County. The Winter Storm Warning includes US 395 from the California state line through Valley Falls, and the higher portions of OR Highway 140. The Advisory includes all but a few portions of northeast Lake County.

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, from 10 AM Sunday to 7 AM PST Monday. For the Winter Weather Advisory, until 10 AM PST Sunday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.

* WHERE...Modoc County. The Winter Storm Warning affects the northeast portion of the county, including the Warner Mountains and US 395 from Davis Creek to the Oregon state line. The Advisory affects the entire area.

  • A Winter Weather Advisory will be issued for any amount of freezing rain, or when 2 to 4 inches of snow (alone or in combination with sleet and freezing rain), is expected to cause a significant inconvenience, but not serious enough to warrant a warning.

  • A Winter Storm Watch is issued when there is the potential for significant and hazardous winter weather within 48 hours. It does not mean that significant and hazardous winter weather will occur.

  • A Blizzard Warning means that the following conditions are occurring or expected within the next 12 to 18 hours.

  • A Winter Storm Warning is issued when a significant combination of hazardous winter weather is occurring or imminent.
