South Central Oregon Wildland Firefighters Continue Response to Numerous Lightning Caused Fires

LAKEVIEW, Ore. – South central Oregon wildland firefighters continue to respond to numerous lightning caused fires last night and today.

From 5 p.m. yesterday to 9 p.m. today, wildland firefighters responded to 26 confirmed fires caused by lighting. This brings the total for Sunday and Monday to 49 lighting caused fires.

The 41 acre Holbrook fire is located approximately eight miles south east of Gerber Reservoir and is the largest incident during this time frame. Lakeview District Bureau of Land Management is the lead agency responding to the Holbrook fire and has initiated a full suppression response with assistance from Fremont-Winema National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry. Forward progression of the fire has been stopped and it is currently 10% contained.

Firefighters from all partner agencies assisted in responding to the numerous lightning strikes.

Current lightning activity is significantly reduced but forecasted to increase during the latter part of the week.
