Fall Astronomy Day event slated

Night sky watchers gather around a telescope at a star party sponsored last May by the Klamath County Museum. Another astronomy event is planned for Saturday, Oct. 9.

A viewing of the planets Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn will be offered Saturday, Oct. 9, by the Klamath County Museum. The free event, held in celebration of Fall Astronomy Day, will be held at the Klamath Falls YMCA, 1221 South Alameda.

Participants should plan to arrive around 6:30 p.m. Telescopes will be set up for viewing.

“Saturn and Jupiter are putting on a great show this fall, and they are always popular targets for viewing through a telescope,” said museum director Todd Kepple. “We’ll also get a brief look at Venus and a very thin crescent moon before the slip below the western horizon.”

In the event of cloudy skies, the event will be postponed.

Anyone who has a personal telescope they would like help with is invited to arrive early, around 6:00. A volunteer will be available to assist in use of telescope.

The museum has two telescopes available for individuals or families to check out for use at home. A volunteer amateur astronomer can help with instructions on how to use the telescopes.
