“…the earliest Klamath County School District could reopen to in-person instruction would be Jan. 4.,” said Glen Szymoniak, KCSD Superintendent.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Earlier today the Klamath County School District announced to families via the KCSD & Me update - that students will not return to in-person learning until January 4, at the earliest.

While Klamath Falls City Schools Superintendent also shared a letter with families thanking the Klamath County Board of Commissioners for granting KFCS $96,000 to purchase new technology to promote student learning.

Both letters are below.

Klamath County School District

As we complete our first week of comprehensive district learning districtwide, we wanted to share with you updated reopening date possibilities.

Our county’s COVID-19 case rates have continued to increase since Thanksgiving. This week Klamath County Public Health has recorded 255 new cases, putting the county over the required metrics that would allow us to return students to classrooms before winter break. This means the earliest Klamath County School District could reopen to in-person instruction would be Jan. 4.

To transition to in-person learning, the number of new cases in the county needs to be under 68 over a two-week period and the test positivity rate needs to be less than 8%.

When metrics allow, the district plans to phase in the return of students to in-person instruction. K-3 students, SPED, and students attending under Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI) would return first. We would then transition in 4-12 students under our in-person hybrid model.

We will continue to update our staff and families as we receive new information and metric updates. Meanwhile, please continue to do your part to reopen our schools – wear a face covering, stay home when you are sick, maintain physical distance from others, and limit social gatherings.

Respectfully,

Glen Szymoniak
Superintendent
Klamath County School District

Klamath Falls City School District

Dear KFCS Families:

Believe it or not, I am not going to mention the virus in this newsletter. Instead I wish to publicly thank Commissioners Minty Morris, Degroot, and Boyd for granting KFCS $96,000 for the purchase of technology to promote student learning. Their generous grant of funds from the Klamath County federal Cares Act funds, will be a big help in updating our technology during the times of comprehensive distance learning and during in-person instruction. It will include the purchase of chrome books, lapel microphones, cameras and tripods. Some of this will allow teachers to be able to stream live classroom lessons to students who must be at home due to illness.

We greatly appreciate this kind action and will use these funds to improve teaching and learning in all our schools.

Best wishes,

Paul Hillyer, Superintendent
