SCOFMP: Memorial Day weekend safety tips

LAKEVIEW, Ore. – The South-Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership would like to emphasize the role we each play in keeping our public and private lands safe when enjoying the outdoors this Memorial Day and through the summer.

In 2022, 87% of wildfires were caused by humans with a total of 61,429 fires on approximately 3.3 million acres nationally. Recreational fires are the 3rd leading wildfire cause.

“Memorial Day weekend is a great time to spend with family and friends camping or barbequing at home. The Oregon Department of Forestry and our partners ask everyone to use caution with anything that can spark a fire.” States Randall Baley, Protection Unit Forester for the Oregon Department of Forestry. “Have a great weekend and be safe.”

As you head out to picnic, camp, or hike in the outdoors, we want you to be safe from the risk of wildfire. Here are some steps to ensure a fire-safe holiday weekend:

  • Make sure all off-road vehicles have a properly functioning catalytic converter or approved spark arrester.

  • Only build campfires when and where authorized and put them completely out; use plenty of water and stir until the coals are cool to the touch before leaving camp even for a few minutes.

  • Dispose of lit, smoking materials appropriately.

  • Remember that discharging fireworks or use of incendiary ammunition or exploding targets is illegal.

  • If towing a boat or trailer, ensure your safety chains are properly secure and not dragging on the ground.

  • Never park your vehicle over dead grass and avoid driving through tall grass—your vehicle can ignite the fuels and start a fire.

  • Check fire restrictions in your area at https://scofmp.org/restrictions.shtml

If you decide to stay home for the three-day weekend and avoid the crowds, now is a good time to think about protecting your home from wildfire. For tips on creating a defensible space for your home and firefighters, go to www.firewise.org
