Klamath Heritage: Cattle Drive in Winter

Klamath County Museum’s Photo of the Week for Feb. 17, 2019, is a winter scene showing a herd of “black baldy” cattle being driven down a road in Langell Valley, perhaps on their way to a different pasture for calving, or closer to a stack of hay.

This image is among a set of photos taken by an unidentified photographer for the Langell Valley Soil and Water Conservation District. The photos were donated to the Klamath County Museum in 1976 by Lloyd Gift, a Langell Valley rancher who served on the district’s original board of directors, as well as on the Klamath County Board of Commissioners. Gift passed away in 1988.

We called on longtime Langell Valley resident and former Museum Advisory Board Member George Keady to help determine the location of this photo. It appears to have been taken on East Langell Valley Road about five miles southeast of Bonanza. Assuming that’s correct, we’ve added this image to our account at whatwasthere.com.

The term “black baldy” refers to cattle that are a cross between the “whiteface” Hereford and black Angus breeds.

The vintage of the Chevy truck suggests a date in the early to mid-1940s or later.
