Klamath Falls’ firs McDonald’s and first mall/

Klamath County Museum’s Photo of the Week for March 24, 2019, is an image published in the Nov. 28, 1971, Herald and News reporting on the opening of the first McDonald’s restaurant in Klamath Falls.

Perhaps inadvertently, or by design, the unnamed photographer captured a view of the Shasta Plaza (later renamed Klamath Mall) through a window in the restaurant. As a result, this image became one of the very few photos of the Klamath Mall that have been preserved.

The mall – originally named Shasta Plaza – on Avalon Street opened in 1969, and was demolished in 2006.
