Klamath Heritage: Tunnel Construction at Dorris [VIDEO]

Klamath County Museum’s Photo of the Week for May 12, 2019, shows a crew working on the north portal of the tunnel on the Southern Pacific line near Dorris, Calif., in 1909.

The photo shows the crew nearing completion of the portal at the north end of the 2,000-foot-long tunnel just north of Dorris. The image helps provide perspective on the size of the stones that line the portal, and the manpower required to set them in place in the days before hydraulic equipment.
