LAKEVIEW, Ore. – The agencies of the South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership (SCOFMP) are continuing to respond to lightning fires sparked by thunderstorms in Klamath and Lake counties.

Today firefighting resources have responded to eight confirmed lightning fires.  The largest has been 2 acres.  All of the fires are staffed.

Recent storms have generally been wet.  However, as conditions dry out, lightning fires typically become more visible.

Smoke from wildfires in Oregon and Northern California are affecting visibility, making it harder for fire lookouts to spot wildfires.  Recognizance flights to spot lightning fires have not been able to fly due to heavy smoke and reduced visibility the past two days.

Even with precipitation, fuel conditions are still extremely dry and wildfires, including those sparked by lightning, can grow quickly, especially with winds.

A Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. over the SCOFMP area for strong, gusty wind with low relative humidity and abundant lightning on dry fuels.  It is expected that more lightning fires will be discovered in the coming days.

Area residents and visitors are reminded that Public Use Restrictions are in effect throughout the SCOFMP area.  Please visit www.scofmp.org to verify the restrictions for the landscape you plan to work or recreate on.  Everyone is asked to be careful with anything that could spark a wildfire and to report suspected wildfires immediately by calling 911.
