UPDATE: 10/14/18 8:41PM

On Sunday, October 14th, 2018, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue (SAR) volunteers met with SAR volunteers from Josephine and Lake County and recovered the body of a 16 year old young man who perished in a fall the previous day.

The area of the fall was a steep embankment overlooking Middle Rosary Lake to the east of the Willamette Ski Area. The young man’s family was notified of the tragedy early Saturday evening.

Investigation reveals the young man was climbing with a friend and a rock handhold gave way causing the fall. The friend was nearby and attempted to help but was also injured. He was later able to walk out of the area with the rest of his Boy Scout Troop. (Previously it was believed he was transported by the Army National Guard helicopter however this information was incorrect.)

A rescue team located the victim with insufficient daylight remaining to safely make the recovery in dangerous terrain. Two Klamath County Sheriff’s Office volunteers spent the night with the victim until the remainder of the searchers made their way into the wilderness after sunrise. The recovery required a large team, including technical rope experts, in order to safely bring the victim out of the wilderness. Twenty SAR members and volunteers were on scene.

Per Klamath County Sheriff’s Office protocol, the name(s) of the deceased and his companion (both minors) will not be released.

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office requests prayer and support for the family and friends of the victim as well as all others involved in this tragic event.

Accidental Death Investigation

On Saturday October 13th, 2018, the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office was informed that two teenaged boys had fallen in the remote area of Middle Rosary Lake in Northern Klamath County while on a camping trip with a Boy Scout Troop from Corvallis, Oregon. Initial reports indicted two boys had been seriously injured in a fall from a peak near the lake and rescue efforts were underway.

First Responders were activated and all available resources were dispatched. An Army National Guard helicopter medical team arrived and pronounced one of the young men (16 years of age) deceased and rescued the other injured teen. The remaining scouts hiked out from the lake and Klamath County Search and Rescue members hiked into the peak near the lake and are standing by overnight.

Due to the remoteness of the area, further investigation and recovery efforts will be conducted at first light on Sunday morning the 14th.

The name of the fall victims are not being released at this time.

When additional information is received it will be the subject of an additional release.

Press release provided from the Klamath County Sheriff’s Department.
