Shooting in Crescent leads to murder charge

On May 9, 2019 at 2:33 a.m., Emergency Dispatch received a call from Rex Ronald Jones, 59, indicating he had shot Russell Sherman Gilbert and that Gilbert didn’t appear to be breathing.

The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded, and the deputies and troopers found the victim deceased. The homicide occurred on property on Cox Road in Crescent, Oregon.  

The Major Crime Team was immediately activated with the Klamath Falls Police Department, Oregon State Police, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, and the Klamath County District Attorney’s office responding. The Klamath County Sheriff’s office is the lead investigation agency.

Mr. Jones was arrested and booked on charges of murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

The Klamath County District Attorney’s office is asking if anyone has pertinent information about the incident to contact the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office.
