S’Ocholis Canyon Fire burning in the 9 Mile Area

CHILOQUIN, Ore. – The S’Ocholis Canyon Fire is currently burning in the 9 Mile area between the communities of Chiloquin and Sprague River on the Chiloquin Ranger District of the Fremont-Winema National Forest and threatening nearby private lands. 

[S’Ocholis is pronounced “Shah-ho-lis” – soft “a”, hard “o”, soft “i”]

The fire is located south of the Sprague River Highway near milepost 12 in the vicinity of Potter’s Park.

The fire was reported early this afternoon and is estimated to be around 30 acres.  Firefighters report that forward progress by the fire has been stopped.  Mop-up is beginning to reach full containment.  The cause is under investigation.

Road closures and evacuations are no longer in place.  Sprague River Highway is open, with traffic controls in place.

Evacuations were conducted by the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, Klamath County Office of Emergency Services, Klamath County Search and Rescue, and local fire departments. 

No structures were lost in the fire.

There will be increased fire traffic in the area, including on Sprague River Highway.  Drivers in the area are asked to use caution and be prepared for delays.

Smoke from the fire is likely to be visible in the area between mileposts 10 and 12 on Sprague River Highway over the next few days.

Conditions are unseasonably warm and dry in Klamath and Lake counties this spring.  The public is asked to use caution with anything that can ignite a fire.  Please call 911 to report suspected wildfires.

 

UPDATE, 2:55 PM, 3/31/2021

The fire is now being referred to as the #SOcholisCanyonFire and is reportedly 20-30 acres. 10-20 residents have been evacuated and no structures have been damaged at this time.

Units on scene include the Klamath County Sheriff, Klamath County Emergency Management, Klamath County Search and Rescue, and Chiloquin Fire & Rescue.

BREAKING NEWS, 1:59 PM, 3/31/2021

Klamath County Emergency Management is reporting a wildfire in the area of Potters Park, 10-miles east of Chiloquin, Oregon.

Sprague River Road is closed at milepost 9.5 in the west and at Lone Pine Road in the east.

Residents east of Switchback Road on the south side of the Sprague River are being evacuated to the Chiloquin Community Center.
