KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - Yesterday afternoon the Spence Fire broke out 15-miles northwest of Klamath Falls on Spence Mountain near OR-140. Initial data indicated the fire at 1-2 acres and had produced a dense vertical column of smoke visible across much of the north side of the Basin.

Crews from Klamath County Fire District 1 and the Oregon Department of Forestry were first to arrive on the scene. There have since been joined by crews from the US Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management.

Evening reports stated that the fire had grown to 10 acres in size and was being manned by multiple fire crews, at least one dozer, and at least 2 helicopters were dropping water on the fire from the sky. By this time ODF assumed command over the fire allowing many of the KCFD1 trucks to return to quarters.

Gusty winds have caused the fire to grow overnight new details including acreage is currently unknown but expected from fire management staff later this morning.
