Homes Evacuated Due to Pipe Bomb Following Stolen Motorcycle Chase & Crash [UPDATE]

On 04/20/18 the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office, following up on the previous nights incident, applied for and served a search warrant at the apartment of Darrel Grisel in the 4900 block of Harlan Drive. Located in the search were many other stolen items identified and returned to the original owners.
Among these items were a small brass canon, jewelry, keys to vehicles, stolen identification, and other valuables. A small amount of methamphetamine and dismantled shotgun shells were located as well as items believed to be stolen…but whose rightful owners are yet unknown.
Most notable is a large amount of collector stamps and decorative dishes. Anyone with these types of items missing from a theft or burglary should contact the Klamath County Sheriff’s Office at 541-883-5130 and leave a message for contact during normal business hours.
Assisting in the search warrant service were the Oregon State Police-Arson and Explosives Unit, who took into possession an incendiary device not safe to keep in the KCSO evidence room, and the Klamath Falls Police Department who attempted to identify items stolen from their jurisdiction.
Additional charges for Darrel Grisel are likely.
On Thursday (04/19/18) at approximately 5:30pm, a victim of a motorcycle theft saw a man riding his stolen motorcycle while wearing the victim’s stolen riding gear. The victim gave chase which ended in a crash in the 2800 block of Homedale Road. While Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies were responding, the suspect (Darrel Grisel) was held on the ground by the theft victim.
When the first deputy arrived on scene, Grisel reached under his body, refusing to show his hands to the deputy; a struggle ensued. Grisel was taken into custody and was found to be in possession of a loaded pistol, a substantial quantity of methamphetamine, and a pipe bomb.
For cautionary reasons, six homes were temporarily evacuated and Homedale Road was closed for three hours while the Oregon State Police (Arson and Explosives Unit) from Central Point responded to clear the pipe bomb. After the Explosives Unit cleared the area by making safe a live pipe bomb, residents returned to their homes and the roadway was again safe for travel.
During a follow-up investigation, the Klamath Falls Police Department located additional stolen property at a residence where Grisel had been staying.
Darrel Grisel was treated at Sky Lakes Medical Center for scrapes and bruises and was then lodged at the Klamath County Jail charged with the following:
- Unlawful Use of a Motor Vehicle
- Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine
- Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
- Unlawful Possession of a Destructive Device
- Probation Violation for Possession of a Weapon- Warrant issued by US Marshal Service
- Theft First Degree
- Burglary First Degree
