KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - On January 1, power costs for irrigators in the Klamath and Lost River Basins in Oregon will drop by 3.5 percent, according to the Klamath Water Users Association. The reduction is welcome, especially given that Pacific Power had requested last February that the Oregon Public Utility Commission approve a ten percent increase in base rates for irrigation. Water Users Motion Says Injunction Not Needed

Water Users Motion Says Injunction Not Needed

Yesterday, [3/7/18] Water Users in the Klamath Project have asked a federal court in San Francisco to modify an injunction issued last year. The injunction, issued in cases brought by the Hoopa Valley and Yurok Tribes and environmental groups is in effect until federal agencies complete a new Endangered Species Act “consultation” process, which is not expected until after the 2019 irrigation season.

The motion, filed jointly by Klamath Water Users Association, Sunnyside Irrigation District, Klamath Irrigation District, Klamath Drainage District, and Tulelake farmer Ben Duval, who intervened in the cases, says the injunction was not necessary at all, but at very least should not apply in 2018. The water users filed the motion to avoid unnecessary harm to irrigators in what is already expected to be a water-short year.

KWUA Provides Harvest Tour to 50 Guests

Klamath County, Ore. - $600 Million is contributed annually to the local economy from Klamath Basin Agriculture. The Klamath Water Users Association (KWUA) understands this well as do members of the Ag industry. However, many outside of this industry understand little about how Basin Agriculture operates and generates revenues into the economy.

To help bridge the gap, the KWUA organizes an annual harvest tour to show just what happens in education, fields, and processors. 2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the Fall Harvest Tour.
