Fires continue to grow in the Modoc National Forest, largest at 19,000 acres

MODOC NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. - There are now 15 active fires on the Modoc National Forest. California Interagency Incident Management Team 12 is taking over management of the July Complex this morning. The Gold Fire remains the largest in the national forest at 19,000 acres and has 35% containment.

Lone Fire reaches 87% containment

The Lone Fire is now 87-percent contained and remains at 5,737 acres. Today as firefighters patrol and extinguish hot spots the primary control objective is to keep the fire within the current perimeter. There are still some smoldering fuels near the line, but this is becoming less of an issue as the vegetation is fully consumed or extinguished.

At least 95 lighting caused wildfire fires are burning in the Southern Oregon and Northern California region. The largest fire is the Lone Fire in the Modoc National Forest at 5,000 acres. Depending on the amount of moisture associated with the thunderstorms and the vegetation types on the ground, it can take several days for the smoke to become visible from a lightning-caused wildfire. Firefighters may be responding to new starts and holdovers throughout the weekend and early into next week.
