"Biblical" plague of grasshoppers reveals unintended consequences of a de-watered landscape

KLAMATH BASIN - For several weeks now, as the morning cool turns to the heat of the day, vast swarms of voracious grasshoppers have been pouring out of the dry, largely barren Lower Klamath National Wildlife Refuge into the surrounding irrigated farm fields around Merrill and Tulelake.  Concerns are growing that crop damage could extend into the millions of dollars.

The service connects riders in cities and communities in Klamath County to Klamath Falls. BTS also offers Basin Lift an in-district door-to-door transportation service for riders aged 65+ or with an ADA-defined disability.

Van Meter Fire now 60% contained

Containment has grown to 60 percent on the Van Meter Fire 13 miles southeast of Klamath Falls. Operations Section Chief Matt Flock shared with nightshift crews that there will be less resources assigned to night shift which means that things are ramping down. He then reminded them that there was still work to be done in the southern section of the fire. The fire is in a good position on the northern divisions and crews are being moved to other priority areas around the fire.

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - On July 25th, 2022, Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the 13000 block of Falvey Rd in Merrill on a report of child abuse. Upon arrival, deputies observed six greenhouses in what was believed to be an unlicensed, illegal, marijuana grow site. While deputies continued to investigate the reported child abuse, detectives were dispatched to investigate the grow.
