Mail Thieves Arrested with Help from Resident’s GPS

Because of mail thefts that had occurred in the area, a Keno resident decided to install a GPS tracking device in a decoy package, and then left the package in a mailbox to see what would happen.

On Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at about 11:00 pm, the resident contacted Klamath 911 and advised dispatchers that the GPS-armed decoy package had been taken and was transmitting its whereabouts as it traveled towards Klamath Falls. Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was subsequently confirmed to be in possession of the stolen package.

Deputies are warning online consumers to beware of a business that claims to be located in Medford. On December 28, 2017, a woman from Ohio called the Jackson County Sheriff's Office to report a potential scam involving an online company located at 3491 South Pacific Highway. The caller was about to wire money to "KSD Trailers LLC" to purchase a horse trailer; but, her bank warned her the funds were destined for an account in Spain. Upon further investigation, the woman realized the business was likely a fraud.

A driver who fled from a crash that left two children injured is now in custody. On Monday, deputies arrested Rowdy Winterhawk Decker, 37, of Klamath Falls, on multiple charges including the felony crimes of second degree assault, third degree assault, and failure to perform the duties of a driver when persons are injured ("hit and run").

UPDTE: Callahan's Lodge / I-5 Incident

ASHLAND – Investigators have identified the suspect in Saturday’s homicide at Callahan’s Lodge as Neal Brian Norman, 50, of Pacific Grove, Calif. Norman had no prior contacts with law enforcement in Jackson County. Detectives believe Norman was driving his white 1999 Honda Accord with California license plates to Oregon to visit a relative, but he ran out of gas near Callahan’s Lodge.

Investigators learned that Norman initially went into the lobby to use the phone, and then returned to his vehicle. He came back into the lodge with a rifle and went into the kitchen, where he shot and killed the cook, Ryan Paul Bagley, 40, of Ashland. Norman left the lodge parking lot in Bagley’s vehicle, a maroon 1993 Subaru Legacy wagon.
