Mail Thieves Arrested with Help from Resident’s GPS

Because of mail thefts that had occurred in the area, a Keno resident decided to install a GPS tracking device in a decoy package, and then left the package in a mailbox to see what would happen.

On Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at about 11:00 pm, the resident contacted Klamath 911 and advised dispatchers that the GPS-armed decoy package had been taken and was transmitting its whereabouts as it traveled towards Klamath Falls. Klamath County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded and conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was subsequently confirmed to be in possession of the stolen package.

On October 5, 2018, law enforcement stopped a vehicle being driven by Mr. Phillip Moskios Jr. on Hwy 97 near Modoc Point Rd.  The traffic stop was made in conjunction with an ongoing drug investigation by the Basin Interagency Narcotics Team (BINET) with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration.  Mr. Moskios had recently been released from the Oregon State Department of Corrections after serving over 16 years, was a convicted felon with prior weapon and drug offenses, and had been released to state and federal supervision.
